The dream of any director is to have a cinematic legend praise some of your work. Steven Spielberg is very much a cinematic legend in the industry and now fellow director, James Gunn, has revealed that a film that he was at the helm of received the highest praise from the prolific film director.
James Gunn is the director of Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and, in response to a fan question on Twitter, Gunn revealed that Steven Spielberg said that the film is his favorite superhero film of all time. It should be noted that Gunn didn’t hear this from Spielberg directly but rather from renowned editor Fred Raskin, who shared the news with Gunn. You can check out Gunn’s tweet below:
I don’t know if that list going around is real. I do know that Spielberg has said his favorite superhero movie is Guardians. I was in the editing room with @FredRaskin when I heard & I maybe kinda cried a little. I’m making movies because of Jaws & Raiders. https://t.co/RcekskqlhA

The list in question that is circulating is said to be Steven Spielberg’s 20 favorite movies of all time. On that list at number five, just behind A Guy Named Joe and right above 1953’s War of the Worlds was Guardians of the Galaxy. No one really knows if this list is authentic but the fact that it inadvertently got Gunn to make the reveal that Guardians is at least Spielberg’s favorite superhero movie is pretty interesting.
It’s not surprising that Guardians of the Galaxy could be a favorite of Spielberg because it is a bit different from the normal superhero offerings we have received in recent years. The characters are pretty obscure unless you’re a hardcore comic book fan but despite the odds against it, the film is considered by some to be one of the best MCU movies of the bunch. Adding some credibility to Gunn’s assertion is that Spielberg had previously spoken of his love for the movie in 2016 during an interview with “Omelete“. The director praised Guardians alongside other comic book adaptations such as The Dark Knight and Superman: The Movie. Spielberg said of Guardians “When it ended, I left the cinema with the feeling that I had just experienced something new, free of cynicism and without concern for being gritty when necessary.”
Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the best-reviewed films of the MCU, scoring a 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also became an unexpected financial success and proved the true power of Marvel since they were able to take a relatively unknown property and make it a hit. Guardians was the highest-grossing domestic release of 2014, grossing just shy of $333 million and its global take reached $773.3 million. The film has spawned two sequels, one released in 2017, and one that Gunn is prepping to film before the end of the year.
