Black Adam’s powers to be brought to life with never-before-used technology
July 30, 2021 by: Kevin Fraser
Dwayne Johnson’s BLACK ADAM movie finally wrapped production, and the actor has called the film a “career-definer,” adding that “this has been one for the ages and easily the hardest labor and toughest grind mentally and physically of my entire career.” You really do get the sense that Johnson and company have been working extra hard to make Black Adam special, and it seems that level of commitment extended to all areas of the production.
While speaking with Collider, Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia teased that the film will be utilizing and displaying Black Adam’s powers in a way never before seen.
This is a character with amazing abilities. He has super speed, can fly, and has world breaking strength to name a few. We wanted to make sure moviegoers feel that throughout the entire movie. You’re not going to see him use super speed just once and then it stops, this is part of his arsenal. It’s common to see abilities fall to the wayside when dealing with characters like that but one of our many goals was to keep continuity there and push the bar in terms of how we do it. For example, the technology we’re using to make Black Adam fly has never been done before. It’s completely unique. It was critical for us to ensure that it felt special, authentic, and real. Jaume took that to heart. Our special effects’ team are Oscar winners, and we certainly put them to work.
As for exactly what this unique technology is, we don’t know, but Dwayne Johnson has previously shared images of some of the “very cutting edge” shots they did during production, including one that used an advanced robotic arm called a Bolt with a high-speed Phantom camera to shoot the actor at 960 frames per second.
In addition to Dwayne Johnson, Black Adam is also set to introduce the Justice Society as Noah Centineo is onboard to play Atom Smasher, with Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate. Black Adam is also slated to star Sarah Shahi as “a university professor and freedom fighter leading the resistance in Kahndaq,” as well as Marwan Kenzari in a mysterious role expected to be the main villain. Mohammed Amer, James Cusati-Moyer, Uli Latukefu, and Bodhi Sabongui round out the rest of the cast. Black Adam is currently slated to hit theaters on July 29, 2022.
Black Adam producer says PG-13 rating won’t lower the kill count
July 30, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
BLACK ADAM might be rated PG-13, but apparently, that’s not going to stop the film from displaying a significant body count. That’s right, parents. Before you bring your kids to Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, you might want to exercise a bit of caution. Oh, who am I kidding? Superheros have been offing people on-screen for generations, and who doesn’t enjoy seeing Johnson serve up a knuckle sandwich with a bit of mustard?
Speaking recently with Collider, Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia explained that the PG-13 rating would have almost no bearing on how many bodies hit the floor in DC’s upcoming film. This should sound like music to the ears of some DC fans who’ve raised concerns about the film not being rated R.
This will be PG-13, but it’s not because we’re being forced to be PG-13. The way we devised the movie, it just wasn’t necessary to make it R, and it’s something we discussed because we did want to be true to the character. The truth is that we felt we were properly able to represent the edge and power that Black Adam has without needing to go to an R rating. This movie can thrive in a PG-13 space and that’s great for us because we want to introduce Back Adam to as many people as possible.
No one ever felt like The Dark Knight was too soft. That was probably one of the hardest PG-13s you’ve ever seen. That’s the way we’ve approached our PG-13, and by no means has that rating limited our kill count!
Now I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen filmmakers do a lot with films that are rated PG-13. It sounds to me like Black Adam director Jaume Collet-Serra will be pushing the rating to the max to tell a solid story. Fan expectations are always a concern, of course. However, if you think DC is going to build its Black Adam project around visceral violence and cuss-happy dialogue, maybe you’ve forgotten who pays the bills? One thing is for sure, Black Adam already has the potential to become one of DC’s best superhero films to date. Why? Well, not only is Dwayne Johnson star as the eponymous antihero, but Aldis Hodge, Pierce Brosnan, Marwan Kenzari, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, and Quintessa Swindell also star. That’s a recipe for badassery if I ever saw one. I say we turn the PG-13 rating up to eleven and dive right in!
San Andreas: Alexandra Daddario says sequel probably isn’t happening anymore
July 28, 2021 by: Gaius Bolling
Dwayne Johnson is busy with a plethora of projects at the moment but it looks like he can clear one of them that was in development off his dance card. SAN ANDREAS, an earthquake disaster film that was released in 2015, had a sequel in development soon after the film became a hit at the box office but one of Johnson’s co-stars, Alexandra Daddario, doesn’t think the sequel is happening anymore.
Daddario is currently making the rounds promoting the release of Die In a Gunfight and during a recent interview with Collider, the actress was asked about the San Andreas sequel. While the film was in development at Warner Bros. at one time, Daddario thinks the project likely isn’t moving forward:
“It was mentioned to me several years ago when I went in to New Line. I don’t think that the exec that I was speaking to is there anymore. But they had a draft written. As far as I know, it’s not happening. It’s been a long time. I don’t think so. I think it was in development at one point I should say. But that happens in Hollywood all the time.”
San Andreas was directed by Brad Peyton and starred Dwayne Johnson as a search and rescue helicopter pilot. In the film, the infamous fault line of the same name gives away and it triggers a massive magnitude 9 earthquake in California which results in mass chaos and destruction. Johnson and his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) have to make it in time from Los Angeles to San Francisco to rescue their daughter (Daddario) before it’s too late. San Andreas was a sizable hit globally, grossing $473 million worldwide. Back in 2016, it was revealed that a sequel was in development and it would take place in the Ring of Fire, with volcanoes causing the mass destruction this time. In 2018, director Brad Peyton said he’d love to return to direct but he wasn’t sure about the sequel’s status at that time.
San Andreas was a nice little throwback to disaster films that dominated during the mid-late ’90s but I don’t think a sequel was 100% necessary. I feel like Warner Bros. execs saw those global box office numbers and just greenlit a sequel without really thinking and, since over 6 years have passed since the release of the first film, I don’t think the moviegoing crowd is exactly hungry for another San Andreas installment.
Would YOU want to see a sequel to San Andreas?
Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is the Dirty Harry of superheroes
July 23, 2021 by: Kevin Fraser
It may have taken a little longer to get off the ground than expected, but Dwayne Johnson’s BLACK ADAM movie finally wrapped production last week. The actor called the film a “career-definer” and added “this has been one for the ages and easily the hardest labor and toughest grind mentally and physically of my entire career.” It sounds as though Black Adam was equally important to director Jaume Collet-Serra, who told Variety that the project is the “most complex puzzle of my career.”
After directing Dwayne Johnson in Jungle Cruise, Jaume Collet-Serra was eager to dive into Dwayne Johnson’s dark side, even calling the Black Adam character the Dirty Harry of superheroes.
Having just done a romantic adventure comedy where he’s very light, I was really attracted to getting the dark version of Dwayne. Basically, turning him into Clint Eastwood in a Western. I was like, ‘You’re like the Dirty Harry of superheroes.’ I didn’t have to convince people that I was right for this one in the same way that I did for Jungle Cruise. It’s like things I’ve done with Liam [Neeson], that tough-guy antihero who has a heart. The world is not black and white. The world is in gray areas, so you need these people that are riding that gray area.
Space Jam: A New Legacy director thinks Dwayne Johnson could star in sequel
July 23, 2021 by: Kevin Fraser
Despite decades of development, it wound up taking twenty-five years before a sequel to Space Jam finally hit theaters, and now that SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY is out in the world, just how long will it take before we see a third film and who will star in it?
Space Jam: A New Legacy director Malcolm D. Lee doesn’t know whether a third Space Jam film is in the cards, but he does know that it would need to feature a global superstar on par with Michael Jordan and LeBron James. “I think the bar has been set so high in terms of the first one with this global iconic superstar in Michael Jordan, and now the same global iconic superstar in LeBron James, who transcends sports,” Lee told Entertainment Weekly earlier this month. “Who is that next person to put into that universe? And then you’ve got to find a script and story that’s good enough to not repeat what’s been done but will capture the spirit of it and keep it going.” So just who does Lee think could star in Space Jam 3? You read the headline, you already know.
Dwayne Johnson would be an interesting choice. It would be different. I’m not exactly sure what his skillset would be, maybe he goes back to wrestling. That might be interesting.
I’ve got to agree with Lee, Dwayne Johnson would definitely be a fun choice, and I think he’d fit in well with Bugs Bunny and all the rest. What do you folks think? Would you like to see a third Space Jam movie and should Dwayne Johnson star in it? If not, who would you like to see lead the potential sequel?
The official synopsis for Space Jam: A New Legacy:
Welcome to the Jam! NBA champion and global icon LeBron James goes on an epic adventure alongside timeless Tune Bugs Bunny with the animated/live-action event “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” from director Malcolm D. Lee and an innovative filmmaking team including Ryan Coogler and Maverick Carter. This transformational journey is a manic mashup of two worlds that reveals just how far some parents will go to connect with their kids. When LeBron and his young son Dom are trapped in a digital space by a rogue A.I., LeBron must get them home safe by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the A.I.’s digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of professional basketball stars as you’ve never seen them before. It’s Tunes versus Goons in the highest-stakes challenge of his life, that will redefine LeBron’s bond with his son and shine a light on the power of being yourself. The ready-for-action Tunes destroy convention, supercharge their unique talents and surprise even “King” James by playing the game their own way.
Space Jam: A New Legacy is now playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max, so check out a review from our own Matt Rooney.
Johnson done with Fast franchise; “Laughed hard” over Diesel’s comments
July 21, 2021 by: Gaius Bolling
It would appear that Dwayne Johnson views his much-publicized Fast feud with Vin Diesel a bit differently than the Dominic Toretto actor following Diesel’s comments during an interview with “Men’s Health” back in June about his interpretation of how things went down between the two.
If you recall, Diesel was asked about the feud last month while promoting Fast 9 and the actor implied that the “feud” was actually a technique to elicit a better acting performance from the former pro wrestler. Diesel said at the time, “I could give a lot of tough love. Not Felliniesque, but I would do anything I’d have to do in order to get performances in anything I’m producing.”
Fast Forward to now. Dwayne Johnson is out promoting Jungle Cruise with his co-star Emily Blunt and during an interview with “The Hollywood Reporter“, Johnson was asked what he thought about Diesel’s comments, and here is where he had to say:
“I laughed and I laughed hard. I think everyone had a laugh at that. And I’ll leave it at that. And that I’ve wished them well. I wish them well on Fast 9. And I wish them the best of luck on Fast 10 and Fast 11 and the rest of the Fast & Furious movies they do that will be without me.”
Perhaps the best part about this exchange is that Emily Blunt is sitting in on this interview and it’s clear that the actress and Johnson have become great friends since doing Jungle Cruise and heading out to promote. Even Blunt chimes in by sarcastically saying, “Just thank God he was there. Thank God. He carried you through that.”
The feud between Johnson and Diesel went public when Johnson posted to his Instagram page about the professionalism of the Fate of the Furious crew and his female co-stars while stating some of the men were “candy asses” who didn’t act like “true professionals.” It was later reported that his issues were with Diesel and Johnson later confirmed that they shot very few scenes together in Fate of the Furious due to rift. It seemed like fences were mended when Johnson posted on Instagram back in 2019 after the success of the Fast & Furious spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw. It would appear that Diesel’s recent comments were a bit of a headscratcher to Johnson.
Diesel has previously stated that Johnson’s character Hobbs was a “tough character to embody” and that it took a lot of work to get the actor to play him as Diesel wanted. Diesel said, “As a producer to say, ‘Okay, we’re going to take Dwayne Johnson, who’s associated with wrestling, and wer’e going to force this cinematic world, audience members, to regard his character as someone that they don’t know. That’s something that I’m proud of, that aesthetic. That took a lot of work. We had to get there and sometimes, at that time, I could give a lot of tough love.”
Does this mean Dwayne Johnson won’t be in Fast 10 or Fast 11? Johnson and Tyrese finally start getting along and now Diesel has to go and think he’s running some kind of acting school on the Fast & Furious set. I’m poking fun here but it seems like Diesel’s perception of the matter is far different from Johnson’s but I guess it’s best that he just laughed at it because he probably thinks the whole thing is just ridiculous.
What are yOUR thoughts on Dwayne Johnson’s comments regarding Vin Diesel’s perception of their Fast & Furious feud?
Black Adam set photo show’s off Dwayne Johnson’s suit and destruction
July 12, 2021 by: Kevin Fraser
After spending years in development, BLACK ADAM is currently in its final week of production. The DC film stars Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam, a powerful anti-hero who has been imprisoned for more than 5000 years and who originally received his powers from the same ancient wizard who gave Shazam (Zachary Levi) his abilities. Johnson took to Instagram to share a new set photo which features destruction and our best look yet at Black Adam’s suit. Check that out below!
“This image of Black Adam from behind gives you a tactile sense of the absolute massive scale and size of our movie,” Johnson wrote. “You also see a little of the intricate and beautiful textured detail of Black Adam’s body suit. (this is not your typical DC or Marvel padded muscle suit) And finally you get a glimpse of the enormous and appropriate destruction. As we all know, superheroes have a code of justice and don’t kill the bad guys. But, Black Adam does.” Dwayne Johnson also recently shared an image of what he promises will be a “very cutting edge” shot. It seems that this particular scene will involve some ultra slow-motion. Johnson explained: “This advanced robot arm called a BOLT is the fastest in the world with a high speed PHANTOM camera that shoots me at an insane 960 frames per second (normally movies are shot at 24 frames per second).”
Red Notice: Dwayne Johnson unveils new image & release date for Netflix film
July 8, 2021 by: Gaius Bolling
Dwayne Johnson previously told us that the release date announcement for his Netflix film RED NOTICE, co-starring Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, was imminent and he wasn’t wrong. Johnson took to his Instagram page to unveil a new image from the film and he provided us with the official release date that was soon confirmed by Netflix.
Red Notice will premiere on Netflix on November 12, 2021. Per the film’s logline, “An Interpol-issued Red Notice is a global alert to hunt and capture the world’s most wanted. But when a daring heist brings together the FBI’s top profiler (Johnson) and two rival criminals (Gadot, Reynolds), there’s no telling what will happen.” You can check out Johnson’s Instagram post below!
Red Notice is reportedly the most expensive Netflix movie made to date with a reported budget of $200 million+. The project began filming in early 2020 and the shoot managed to reach completion by November of the same year, despite the onset of the global pandemic. Johnson referred to the work being done on set to keep everyone safe as the “most aggressive health and safety Covid measures in all of Hollywood.” While many other productions suffered substantial film delays throughout the year due to the pandemic, Red Notice managed to keep on trucking virtually unscathed.
Will YOU be watching Red Notice? Watch Johnson, Reynolds, and Gadot team up when the film hits Netflix on November 12, 2021.
Fast & Furious: These Japanese film titles for the franchise will spark joy
July 6, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
Pop your gas cap and get ready to have an amazing naming convention poured into your tank because someone has collected the amazing Japanese release titles for the Fast & Furious franchise. That’s right, folks. If you thought Universal lost the plot on naming films in the Fast series after Fast Five, you had better buckle up.
As collected on Reddit, here are the Japanese release titles for all nine Fast & Furious films:
The Fast and the Furious (2001): Wild Speed
2 Fast 2 Furious (2003): Wild Speed X2
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006): Wild Speed X3: Tokyo Drift
Fast & Furious (2009): Wild Speed MAX
Fast Five (2011): Wild Speed MEGA MAX
Fast & Furious 6 (2013): Wild Speed: Euro Mission
Furious 7 (2015): Wild Speed: Sky Mission
The Fate of the Furious (2017): Wild Speed: Ice Break
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019): Wild Speed: Super Combo
F9 (2021): Wild Speed: Jet Break
Is it just me, or do so many of these titles sound like DLC for a Fast & Furious video game? My personal favorites are Furious 7 (2015): Wild Speed: Sky Mission and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019): Wild Speed: Super Combo. That last one sounds like you would get Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson as toys in a McDonald’s Happy Meal, doesn’t it? Would you like fries with your Box Office Behemoth Burger?
I suppose it doesn’t matter what these movies are called, so long as they clean up at the box office, right? As of this moment, F9: THE FAST SAGA has earned $497M+ worldwide since June 25. That’s a mighty impressive number considering that many theaters are still shuttered in certain parts of the world, places like Ontario, Canada. Oh, but I’m not bitter. Not at all. It’s not like F9 will be the first film in the franchise that I won’t get to see on the big screen or anything. Grumble, grumble. Let’s get our act together, eh, Ontario?
What do you think of the Japanese titles for the Fast & Furious franchise? Do you think Universal has made a mistake by not adopting these amazing titles? Do we need to rethink the way we name our film sequels? Imagine buying a ticket for Indiana Jones and the Ancient Super Combo. Now that’s a movie I would pre-order tickets for.

Jungle Cruise: New trailers promise a spirited Summer thrill ride
June 30, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
Update: Not long after Dave Gobson, I mean Dwayne Johnson, introduced a new trailer for Disney’s JUNGLE CRUISE, Emily Blunt helped debut the real trailer, which focuses on her character, the intrepid Lily Houghton. In the footage, we find Blunt’s bookish character setting off for adventure down the Amazon river with Johnson’s mouthy kipper, Frank Wolff. While Frank appears to be big and tough, it looks like he’ll need Houghton to pull his bacon from the fire on more than one occasion throughout the film.
Dwayne Johnson’s mana is overflowing as he introduces the latest trailer for Disney’s Jungle Cruise. Does that sound gross? I assure you, it’s not. This is Disney we’re talking about, folks. They’re usually a bit more sly with how they hide their sexual innuendos. Anyway, before the trailer starts to play, Johnson addresses his fans and assures them that now is the perfect time for Disney’s next live-action spectacle to set sail in theaters. He also takes time to hype his co-star, Emanuelle Blart. Wait, that’s not it. It’s Amelia Brunt. No, that’s not it either. Maybe it’s Emile Spliff? Okay, sources are telling me it’s Emily Blunt. Now that I think about it, that makes a lot more sense.
In the new trailer, we’re introduced to Frank Wolff, the skipper of a rickety boat whose job is to take his passengers for a ride, both figuratively and literally. When Wolff’s boss informs him that he’s going to take the engine to his boat unless he pays him a handsome sum of money, Wolff finds himself up Shit’s Creek and in need of a paddle. This is where Emily Blunt’s Lily Houghton comes in. Together, they embark on an adventure that’s filled with danger, wild animals, and perhaps some questionable appropriation.
Per Disney, here’s the official synopsis for Jungle Cruise:
Join fan favorites Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt for the adventure of a lifetime on Disney’s Jungle Cruise, a rollicking thrill-ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton. Lily travels from London, England to the Amazon jungle and enlists Frank’s
questionable services to guide her downriver on La Quila—his ramshackle-but-charming boat. Lily is determined to uncover an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities—possessing the power to change the future of medicine. Thrust on this epic quest together, the unlikely duo encounters
innumerable dangers and supernatural forces, all lurking in the deceptive beauty of the lush rainforest. But as the secrets of the lost tree unfold, the stakes reach even higher for Lily and Frank, and their fate— and mankind’s—hangs in the balance.
I don’t know about you, but I am eagerly awaiting Blunt’s reply to this trailer. Clearly, she and Johnson have a great, playful working relationship. That seems to be the thing with Johnson, doesn’t it? He and his co-stars often appear as peas in a pod. Well, unless you hail from the Fast franchise, I suppose, but that’s a whole other kettle of fish. From where I’m standing, Jungle Cruise looks like a blast. It’s got charming characters, swashbuckling, a gorgeous setting, and is that a villain made of snakes? Disney, I’ll take one ticket for this one, please.
Disney’s Jungle Cruise will set sail in theaters on July 30, 2021.
Red One: Dwayne Johnson’s holiday action-adventure film lands at Amazon
June 28, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
It appears as if everything is coming up Milhouse for Amazon Studios after securing Dwayne Johnson's holiday action-adventure comedy Red One.
Amazon recently won the project after what I can assure you was a heated bidding war. Johnson and Dany Garcia's Seven Bucks Productions are developing the feature film treatment, which has Johnson lined up to star. Chris Morgan, who wrote Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, will write the script. Cameras are set to roll in 2022 for a 2023 release.
Plot details are being kept under wraps at this time, though sources indicate that the story will take Johnson's character to different parts of the globe during the holidays. We also hear that Santa Claus could somehow be involved. Yo, if Johnson ends up decking Old St. Nick in his holly jolly face, this might be the greatest film of all time. Red One is being approached as a four-quadrant project, meaning that it could launch as more than a franchise, but something that demands merchandise as well.
“Seven Bucks Productions is a leader in creating unique and compelling entertainment for the entire family, and we know Red One will continue that tradition,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “Hiram’s concept and the world he’s envisioned are uniquely original and we are so excited to team with Seven Bucks Productions and Chris Morgan to help bring it to life. Red One is just the first step in what we know will be a successful, collaborative venture.”
“Hold my Mana, because this is exciting,” said Johnson. “Our Seven Bucks is very bullish on our partnership with Amazon Studios; underpinned with some innovation, some pioneering, and a lot of positive energy and passion. I’ve been very impressed with Jen Salke and her team’s vision and ambition to create an enormous, fun, and unique Red One holiday universe for families around the world to enjoy.”
“Red One is incredibly special to me and a story I’ve wanted to tell for years,” added Hiram Garcia. “An epic, edge-of-your-seat, action-adventure that takes beloved holiday mythology and turns it on its head. I’m thrilled to have our Seven Bucks team join forces with Amazon to bring this fun Holiday tale to life for a global audience.”
It's about damn time that someone roped Dwayne Johnson into a holiday action franchise, don't you think? Listen, if this turns out to be a Dwayne Johnson and Santa Claus buddy comedy, I'm going to lose my mind. I need that in my life. Let's make it happen, Amazon!
Fast & Furious becomes the fifth-biggest franchise at the global box office
June 24, 2021 by: Gaius Bolling
As we prepare for Fast 9 to race into domestic cinemas this Friday, the film has already pulled in some serious coin overseas. The film is nearing the $300 million mark internationally, with $203 million of that haul coming from China alone and now its recent box office feats have allowed the franchise to land on a new ranking on the global box office chart.
According to “Variety”, the Fast franchise has now surpassed the X-Men series to become the fifth-biggest property at the global box office with a current total of $6.2 billion across ten films. The Fast Saga now ranks next after Marvel, Harry Potter, James Bond, and Star Wars in terms of box office revenues. Making what the Fast franchise has accomplished a truly remarkable feat is that most of these other franchises are based on established IP. The Fast saga doesn’t have a comic book or novels to fall back on with an established fanbase. This all began with a street racing film 20 years ago that cost $38 million to make and now the franchise has reached global box office heights that no one could ever imagine.
The first film, released in 2001, grossed $206.4 million worldwide while the low point for the franchise came with the third film, Tokyo Drift, which grossed $157.7 million globally. Once the original cast was brought back for 2009’s Fast & Furious, that is when things truly took off. By Fast Five, which brought Dwayne Johnson to the franchise, the worldwide total for that film hit $630.1 million. From there the worldwide grosses kept increasing. Fast & Furious 6 grossed $789.3 million worldwide and Furious 7, which had to deal with the death of Paul Walker, shot things into the stratosphere with a total of $1.51 billion. Furious 7 remains not just the highest-grossing entry of this franchise, but one of the biggest movies in history. The Fate of the Furious came down a bit with $1.23 billion but with grosses like that, no one is complaining. Hell, even spinoff Hobbs & Shaw grossed $760.3 million worldwide. If you’re wondering why they keep making these, the proof is in the numbers.
The news of The Fast Saga’s new box office milestone comes as it heads into its opening in the U.S. Box office tracking has the film opening between $50-60 million while others are predicting a start of $70 million+ due to strong presales and moviegoers wanting to go see a true blockbuster on the big screen after being withheld from that experience for over a year due to the pandemic. Universal Pictures is keenly aware that, despite huge box office markets like Los Angeles and New York City being 100% open with no capacity limits, the same cannot be said for other locations such as Canada, which does cut into the potential financial take of the ninth film of the franchise. That being said, Fast 9 is performing well in these pandemic-influenced times and it’s more than likely that the film will have the biggest opening of the pandemic box office. Currently, A Quiet Place Part II holds that distinction with a $48 million opening over its first three days and $58 million through the Memorial Day weekend. That film has grossed a pandemic best of $127.7 million to date in the States with a global take that has topped $224 million so far.
Are YOU surprised by The Fast Saga’s global box office rank?
Fast & Furious: Justin Lin says Hobbs & Shaw could return in Fast 10
June 18, 2021 by: Gaius Bolling
Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are sitting out of Fast & Furious 9 as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw but director Justin Lin says there is a strong chance they could both return to the main franchise in Fast & Furious 10.
Dwayne Johnson became a franchise mainstay in what is arguably the best sequel of the bunch, Fast Five. Johnson went on to appear in the next three installments before heading over to the Fast spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw. He was joined by Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw, who entered the franchise during a cameo in Fast & Furious 6 before going on to be the main villain in Furious 7 followed by some character redemption in The Fate of the Furious. Both actors are missing in action in Fast 9 but, during a chat with “CinemaBlend“, director Justin Lin was asked if he would bring back Hobbs & Shaw for Fast & Furious 10? While Lin didn’t give a definitive answer, he did admit that he doesn’t believe either character is gone for good. Here is what he had to say:
“I think that’s always been our approach… So many of the conversations I have is about characters that are not even in there, but are still, obviously, they are living and breathing in this universe. On this one, when I came back, I was thinking a lot about Hobbs and Shaw, and all of the other characters. I never think of them as being gone, for sure.”
There have been virtually no plot details revealed about Fast & Furious 10 except that it will conclude the franchise. From what I understand, the film will be split up into two movies that will be shot back-to-back but I’m not too clear on if that’s just considered the tenth film split into two movies or if we’re simply getting a Fast 10 and Fast 11 to wrap up the saga. It’s a multi-billion dollar franchise so they can pretty much go about this any way they want to. I do know that it would be silly not to bring either of these characters back. Vin Diesel did famously have an off-screen feud with Johnson back in 2019 but that has since been resolved, with Johnson publicly thanking his co-star and hinting at a return in the tenth installment. Tyrese Gibson and Johnson also had their beef for a bit when the latter decided to do Hobbs & Shaw before the core group could make another Fast film but that has also recently been squashed. It appears that all is well in the Fast family so bringing this duo back just seems like a matter of time. Plus, I think fans would like to see Deckard Shaw and Sung Kang’s Han come face to face to bring some validation to the #JusticeForHan movement.
Do YOU want to see Hobbs and Shaw return in Fast and Furious 10?
Fast & Furious: John Cena wants a Dwayne Johnson rematch in a future sequel

John Cena makes his Fast & Furious debut in Fast 9 as Jakob Torretto, brother of Vin Diesel’s Dom. The wrestler turned actor gets to face off against the entire Fast family but there is one person that Cena wants to face again and it’s another fellow wrestler turned bonafide action star.
During a talk with “Geek Culture,” Cena said that he can’t wait to come face to face with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in a future Fast film if that possibility arises. The two have met up in the ring as wrestlers but Cena wants the opportunity to have Jakob go head-to-head with Johnson’s Luke Hobbs.
“I don’t know if that’ll happen and that’s very much up to the Fast audience to decide. As the Fast saga grows and evolves, I’m excited for a possible moment like that but there’s no guarantee. I hope it happens and if the audiences around the world hope the same thing, who knows.”
Fans would probably love to see John Cena and Dwayne Johnson duke it out in a future Fast film and marketing possibilities alone would probably make Universal Pictures very excited. Cena was asked what Jakob might say to Hobbs if they ever come across each other and Cena said with a laugh, “The low-hanging fruit answer to that is, ‘You can’t see me.'”
It hasn’t been officially announced if Dwayne Johnson is heading back to the main franchise following the 2019 spin-off Hobbs & Shaw. I imagine that he would return since the next installment is said to be the last of the main franchise and it will be split up into two films to bring the saga to a proper conclusion. I imagine they want every possible person responsible for the success of the franchise to return for the final installment and Johnson is a huge reason the films turned into true worldwide successes beginning with his first appearance in Fast Five. Johnson sat out of Fast 9 and while there was some reported tension involving Johnson, Diesel, and Tyrese Gibson, everyone has squashed the beef and they are on good terms now.
It would also be interesting to see them on screen together because Cena once made some comments about Johnson that are a tad ironic now. Cena once called him a “sell-out” for pursuing an acting career. Last year, Cena walked back on that comment by saying “I said some things there were less than nice. He said some things that were less than nice. And I can assure you, in our line of work there is a grey area where imagination becomes very real and we were right in the sweet spot of that grey area, each watching the other’s every move and not too happy with the other party. It was stupid of me. It genuinely was. That was my perspective at the time.”
Do YOU want to see John Cena and Dwayne Johnson square-off in a fire Fast film? Fast 9 hits screens on June 25, 2021.
Emergency Contact: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to lead, Dwayne Johnson to produce
June 4, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
It's been confirmed that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, Watchmen) will lead Warner Bros. Emergency Contact, an action vehicle set in the Austin, Texas, underground music scene. Dwayne Johnson's Seven Bucks and Beau Flynn’s Flynn Pictures will produce. Joining the production efforts are Hiram Garcia and Dany Garcia, also of Seven Bucks. In addition, Abdul-Mateen will also executive produce alongside writers Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, and Scott Sheldon.
Abdul-Mateen has had Hollywood in the palm of his hand ever since he played Manta in 2018's Aquaman. After appearing in Jordan Peele's Us, and the unassuming Cal Aber in HBO's Watchmen, Abdul-Mateen brought down the house as Bobby Seale in The Trial of the Chicago 7. Next, he'll star as Anthony McCoy in Nia DaCosta's urban horror film Candyman. Rather than rest between films, Abdul-Mateen is currently filming The Matrix 4 for Lana Wachowski. He joins a stunning cast that includes Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra, Jonathan Groff, Ellen Hollman, Neil Patrick Harris, and Jada Pinkett Smith, among others.
Plot details for Emergency Contact are being kept off the dancefloor at this time, though we'll be sure to let you know as soon as we learn more.

Black Adam set-photos shared by Dwayne Johnson tease the DC film
May 24, 2021 by: Kevin Fraser
BLACK ADAM has been in development for so long that it almost feels a little surreal that the film is actually shooting, but shooting it is, and Dwayne Johnson has shared a couple of photos from the set featuring a look at an enormous sound-stage as well as a shrouded glimpse at the title character himself. Check those out below!
“We’re hitting our midway point stride and our A-Team production crew continue to showcase why they’re the best in our industry,” Johnson wrote in the caption, and went on to tease a little about the history of his character. “If you know the comic book mythology, then you know where his pain comes from,” wrote Johnson. “His rage. His wife and children killed. His people brutally enslaved. He is not a superhero, but rather a champion. Champion of the poor and beaten down. Champion of the people. And he is the most unstoppable force in the DC UNIVERSE.” In addition to Dwayne Johnson, Black Adam is also set to introduce the Justice Society as Noah Centineo is onboard to play Atom Smasher, with Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Dr.
DC League of Super Pets: Dwayne Johnson to voice Krypto
May 21, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
DC had better order some milk bones by the truckload for their craft services table because Dwayne Johnson is set to voice Krypto the Superdog in the studio's upcoming animated feature DC League of Super-Pets. Johnson's Seven Bucks production company is producing, with writer-director Jared Stern at the front of the animated superhero adventure. The anticipated film that is bound to be filled with all manner of super-animal antics hits theaters on May 20, 2022. This puts the project on pace to open before Memorial Day weekend next year when Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 7, Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4, and an untitled Disney live-action title are all scheduled to be unleashed.
The film, which will serve as Krypto's first-ever feature, hails from Warner Bros and Warner Animation Group. Sam Levine is co-directing, with DC planning to pack the cast with other high-profile celebs. Patricia Hicks, Stern, and, under their Seven Bucks Productions banner, Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia, are producing the film. John Requa, Glenn Ficarra, and Nicholas Stoller are executive producing.
The League of Super-Pets made its debut in 1962, in the pages of Adventure Comics #293. Since that time, characters like Krypto the Superdog, Streaky the Supercat, Beppo the Super Monkey, and Comet the Super Horse have appeared from time to time to lend a helping paw (or hoof) in the ongoing battle against evil. While some of the pets have had their own comic series throughout the years, several have been lost amidst DC's never-ending array of world-changing events, reboots, and edict to establish a more serious multiverse. However, that hasn't stopped the publisher from introducing fans to Damian Wayne's dog Titus, Aquaman's seahorse Storm, Flexi the Plastic Bird, Clay Critter (R.I.P.), and my personal favorite, Bat-Cow.
This is, of course, Johnson's second project set up at WarnerMedia, with the box office behemoth already locked and loaded for the long-gestating live-action superhero feature Black Adam.
Have you ever wondered how Dwayne Johnson manages so many major projects all at once? Do you think he has a cloning machine we don't know about, or is he just super organized? I can't imagine being his manager and having to schedule out his variety of commitments. He's undoubtedly one of the hardest-working stars in the biz, and I can't wait to experience the energy he brings to Superman's very good boy, Krypto.
Jungle Cruise: Dwayne Johnson Disney film to hit theaters & Disney+ in July
May 13, 2021 by: Gaius Bolling
In a bit of a surprising move, Disney’s JUNGLE CRUISE, which stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, will debut in theaters and Disney+ Premier on July 30, 2021. Dwayne Johnson confirmed the news on his Instagram page which can be viewed below!
According to “Deadline“, Disney presented the filmmaking team behind the film with various options for releasing the movie based on the popular Disney theme park attraction. The ultimate decision to go with the theater and streaming release hybrid came down to the continued closure of offshore markets such as Europe and Brazil due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Europe is reopening as soon as next month but Disney didn’t want to risk going solely theatrical, especially since provinces in Canada also remain closed and likely won’t see their theaters open until mid-June. The overseas markets would’ve been killer for Jungle Cruise due to its name recognition in relation to the ride and the international appeal of Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. Without those markets fully in play, Disney decided to continue experimenting with their theatrical and Disney+ Premier release pattern.
Jungle Crusie is the fourth Disney film to use this release strategy, although this is still a temporary release solution according to the Mouse House. Raya and the Last Dragon was the last film to go this route and it will be followed by Cruella at the end of this month and Marvel’s Black Widow on July 9, 2021. When Raya and the Last Dragon made its debut earlier this year, No. 3 exhibitor Cinemark refused to play the film over its opening weekend due to stiff terms from Disney. With some time to work out new terms, Cinemark has come around and made a deal with Disney, among other studios, to begin playing films that also debut on streaming simultaneously. Despite the fact that Raya and the Last Dragon was released weeks ago, Cinemark is now playing the film and booking Black Widow for July.
Jungle Cruise is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and is set during the early 20th century. In the film, a riverboat captain named Frank (Johnson) takes a scientist (Blunt) and her brother (Jack Whitehall) on a mission into a jungle to find the Tree of Life which is believed to possess healing powers. All the while the trio must fight against dangerous wild animals and a competing German expedition. The film also stars Edgar Ramirez, Jesse Plemons, Paul Giamatti, Andy Nyman, Quim Gutierrez, Dani Rovira, Veronica Falcon, and Simone Lockhart. Prior to its new release date, Jungle Cruise was expected to hit screens on October 11, 2019, before being moved to July 24, 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic ultimately delayed the film until its current release date of July 30, 2021.
Do YOU think this is the best release strategy for Jungle Cruise?
Young Rock & Kenan earn second seasons at NBC
April 30, 2021 by: Gaius Bolling
NBC is doubling down on its relationship with Dwayne Johnson and Kenan Thompson. It has just been announced that the network has renewed Johnson's Young Rock and Thompson's Kenan for season two. This marks the second and third renewal for a comedy series on the network after they handed Mr. Mayor a second season last month. Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Programming at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, had this to say about the renewals:
"It has been a true joy to watch Dwayne Johnson and Kenan Thompson on NBC every week and see families connect with their relatable, entertaining and heartwarming stories. We’re thrilled to renew both of these shows for another season and can’t wait to see more from Dwayne, Kenan and the incredibly talented casts and producing teams behind each of them."
Young Rock has performed steadily since making its premiere back in February. NBC states that Young Rock is the number two new comedy of the season in the coveted 18-49 demographic and the pilot episode has been seen by 13.4 million viewers across various platforms. Speaking of other platforms, the network also pointed out that Young Rock is its top comedy debut across digital platforms on record through 60 days with 3.6 million digital views. The bottom line here is, NBC knows it's good to stay in business with Dwayne Johnson.
Young Rock focuses on the different chapter's in Johson's life as he's growing up. From his early days growing up in a strong and resilient family, to being surrounded by the wild characters of his professional wrestling family, to playing football at the University of Miami, Young Rock explores the crazy rollercoaster that has shaped Dwayne into the man he is today and the larger-than-life characters he's met along the way. Johnson appears on the series as himself and the show also stars Joseph Lee Anderson, Stacey Leilua, Adrian Groulx, Bradley Constant, Uli Latukefu, Ana Tuisila, Fasitua Amosa, and John Tui.
The other renewed comedy from this block, Kenan, has also been a solid performer for NBC. The network says that the show, which also premiered in February, ranks as its number four digital comedy launch to-date and the first episode has been watched by 7.4 million viewers across various platforms. Kenan Thompson is a mainstay at NBC as he still fully appears as a regular on Saturday Night Live so this is another example of staying in business with the right people.
Kenan is a single-camera comedy that follows a widowed dad, played by Thompson, who's juggling a high-profile job as the host of an Atlanta morning show and raising his two girls. Kenan is trying to move on but his father-in-law Rick (Don Johnson), brother Gary (Chris Redd), and co-workers all have strong opinions on how Kenan should live his life. The series also stars Kimrie Lewis, Dani and Dannah Lane.
Have YOU been watching Young Rock and Kenan? Happy to see them return?
Masters of the Universe’s Noah Centineo has reportedly exited the movie
April 29, 2021 by: Kevin Fraser
Over two years ago, it was reported that Noah Centineo had signed on to star in the Masters of the Universe movie, but according to Collider, Sony Pictures will have to start searching for a new He-Man as Centineo has reportedly exited the movie. A representative for Centineo told Collider that the actor "is no longer attached to that project," but no reason for his exit was given.
Noah Centineo had been putting in quite a lot of work towards getting into He-Man shape and had gained 30lbs of muscle for the role, but with the pandemic likely playing havoc with the production schedule, it's not hard to imagine that Centineo couldn't wait around anymore, especially as he's currently filming Black Adam alongside Dwayne Johnson and has several other projects on his slate. Now that Centineo appears to be out, who would you like to see step into He-Man's furry briefs?
He-Man, aka Prince Adam, is the heir to the throne of the planet Eternia. Thanks to his magical Power Sword, Prince Adam is able to transform into He-Man in order to defend his kingdom and Castle Grayskull from the evil sorcerer Skeletor and his band of minions. Adam & Aaron Nee (Band of Robbers) will be helming the film based on a script by Matt Holloway & Art Marcum (Men in Black: International). The franchise last graced the big-screen all the way back in 1987 for Masters of the Universe, which saw Dolph Lundgren (Creed II) playing He-Man and Frank Langella (The Americans) playing Skeletor. The film was a critical and commercial failure at the time, but over the years, has come to be viewed as a cult classic.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on possible Presidential run: “It’d be my honor”
April 11, 2021 by: Mike Catalano
Could The Rock actually become the most electrifying man in politics? Maybe one day? I know the idea of Dwayne Johnson running for President has been bounced around for some time. It is even the focal point of his new NBC sitcom, Young Rock. Well, after an article was posted about how 46% of Americans would support a Rock Prez run, the superstar responded on Twitter:
Not sure our Founding Fathers ever envisioned a six-four, bald, tattooed, half-Black, half-Samoan, tequila drinking, pick up truck driving, fanny pack wearing guy joining their club – but if it ever happens it’d be my honor to serve the people ???????????????????????? https://t.co/6Xd9ADzqX7
— Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) April 9, 2021
Okay, I’m very curious what you guys think of all this. Would you support The Rock running for President? Do you think he is at all serious? Or do you think this is just a publicity stunt? Definitely let us know in the comments section below!
Black Adam: release date now July 2022
March 28, 2021 by: Mike Catalano
The DC Universe is now set to bestow the powerful BLACK ADAM upon us! We just received word that Dwayne Johnson’s superhero movie will be striking movie theaters on July 29, 2022. The Rock himself actually took to the television airwaves to make the announcement in the midst of March Madness! Check it out up top and enjoy Mr. Johnson giving a little ribbing to Space Jam star, Charles Barkley!
As there is no official plot synopsis for Black Adam, we do know that it will serve as a prequel to Shazam! and is considered the eleventh installment in the DC Extended Universe. Also, here’s a little quote from the black-suited anti-hero: “Five thousand years ago, Kahndaq, was a melting pot of cultures, wealth, power, and magic. Yet, most of us have nothing, except for the chains around our necks. Kahndaq needed a hero, instead, they got me. I did what needed to be done and they imprisoned me for it. Now, five thousand years later, I’m free and I give you my word… No one will ever stop me again.“
In addition to Dwayne Johnson, the film will also feature Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate, and Marwan Kenzari as the mysterious villain. Are you guys ready for Black Adam? Let us know in the comments below!
Black Adam: Pierce Brosnan signs on to play Dr. Fate
March 24, 2021 by: Kevin Fraser
Well here’s a fun bit of casting news for this Wednesday afternoon — THR has reported that Pierce Brosnan will be joining the cast of BLACK ADAM as Dr. Fate, aka Kent Nelson, the son of an archeologist who was taught sorcery skills and was given the magical Helmet of Fate. The good doctor is one DC’s older superheroes and also happens to be a member of the Justice Society of America, which will be featured in the Black Adam film.
Dwayne Johnson will be starring as Black Adam, but the film will also serve as an introduction to the Justice Society as Noah Centineo is onboard to play Atom Smasher, with Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. Producer Hiram Garcia has previously teased his excitement about introducing the team.
We are so excited to introduce the Justice Society, especially Hawkman who’s such a beloved character and one of those heroes who’s always meant so much to the DC universe. Having them play in the same sandbox as Black Adam is going to be fantastic, and for the already established fans of these characters I think they are going to be really excited to see what elements from classic story lines we take inspiration from as we bring these characters together. When you take a powerhouse like Black Adam and inject him into this DC cinematic universe you want to make sure you are putting characters around him that can really up the stakes. As DJ likes to say the hierarchy of power in the DC universe really is going to change so Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone will have their hands full no matter how we choose to have them interact with Black Adam.
Dwayne Johnson took to Instagram earlier this week to show off the Black Adam script and to confirm that they’re about three weeks out from shooting. “We are approximately three weeks away from shooting Black Adam and I can’t believe we are at the finish line with this thing,” Johnson said in the video. “And what a journey it has been. Actually, I can believe it considering how hard we’ve worked over the years.” The film is also slated to star Sarah Shahi as “a university professor and freedom fighter leading the resistance in Kahndaq,” as well as Marwan Kenzari in a mysterious role expected to be the main villain.
Black Adam: Dwayne Johnson confirms production begins in three weeks
March 22, 2021 by: Kevin Fraser
It’s certainly been a long road for BLACK ADAM, but the Dwayne Johnson film is finally expected to kick off production in April. Considering that Johnson was first cast as the DC anti-hero close to seven years ago, you can imagine that the actor is eager to get this thing off the ground.
Dwayne Johnson took to Instagram recently to show off the Black Adam script and to confirm that they’re about three weeks out from shooting. “We are approximately three weeks away from shooting Black Adam and I can’t believe we are at the finish line with this thing,” Johnson said in the video. “And what a journey it has been. Actually, I can believe it considering how hard we’ve worked over the years.”
Dwayne Johnson also showcased the first page of the script, which includes a quote that sums up the character: “Well, I’d love to wear a rainbow every day.And tell the world that everything’s okay. But I’ll try to carry off a little darkness on my back‘Till things are brighter…I’m the Man in Black.” Johnson said that “It gives you guys an example of who Black Adam is, and who Black Adam is to the world of the DC universe. But also, I think, who Black Adam is to the world of superhero universes period, and that is the DC Universe but that also includes the Marvel superhero universe too. I’m not saying there’s gonna be a mashup, what I am saying is it doesn’t matter to me, it doesn’t matter to Black Adam, you put ‘em all on notice – whether they’re part of the Marvel universe or the DC universe, they’re all on notice now.”
In addition to Dwayne Johnson, who is obviously set to star as Black Adam, the film will also feature Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Marwan Kenzari as the mysterious villain.
Arnold Schwarzenegger tops poll of who would save us in an alien invasion
March 18, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
Let it be known that residents of the U.K. know what’s up when it comes to selecting someone to help lead humanity against an alien invasion. I’m talking about Arnold Schwarzenegger, of course, as if it’s any surprise. Today, a U.K. poll of 2000 British adults declared that the Governator is their top pick as Saviour of the Universe.
“I want to thank the people for putting their faith in me,” Schwarzenegger said on Twitter about being elected for the role. Then, like a true patriot, the 73-year-old actor and former California Governor said, “I am ready to serve.” Hell yeah! I say we arm this man to the teeth and turn him loose! Have you ever seen Commando, Predator, or any of the Terminator movies? Those aliens would be toast.
I want to thank the people for putting their faith in me. I am ready to serve. https://t.co/RiBtNmWtVi
— Arnold (@Schwarzenegger) March 18, 2021
Included on the list of 20 celebrities “who would best deal with an alien invasion,” is Independence Day star Will Smith, who came in second. Other names that appeared on the list include Sir David Attenborough, Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, Gillian Anderson, Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, and oddly, Donald Trump.
“Arnold Schwarzenegger is a strong choice for dealing with an alien invasion, bearing in mind he’s not only a screen action hero but was also Governor of California,” said a spokesman for TV channel BLAZE, which commissioned the study. “Although it’s worrying to see that so many celebrities with fictional alien experience are considered by many to be better candidates than our current crop of world leaders.”
My personal picks for who should lead the charge against an alien invasion include Charlize Theron, Iko Uwais, Dwayne Johnson, Lupita Nyong’o, and, of course, Schwarzenegger. Who would you want to lead the charge if angry aliens emerged from the clouds and started raining hellfire down upon us? Assemble your team and post your list in the comments section below.
Southland Tales: Richard Kelly hopes Dwayne Johnson returns for sequel
January 22, 2021 by: Kevin Fraser
Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko was a huge success, but Kelly’s sophomore outing SOUTHLAND TALES wasn’t quite so lucky. “As the city stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental chaos,” reads the official logline, “the fates of an eclectic set of characters – including an amnesia-stricken action star (Dwayne Johnson), an adult film star developing her own reality TV project (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and a police officer whose identity has split in two (Seann William Scott) – intertwine with each other and with the whole of humanity.” Over the years, Southland Tales has developed a growing cult following, and Arrow Video will soon be releasing a 2K restoration of the film that includes the 145-minute theatrical cut as well as the 160-minute Cannes cut that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006, but Kelly has said that he would love to be able to return to the world.
The director has previously discussed expanding Southland Tales with an longer cut of the story that places the existing film as merely the middle segment of a much bigger tale. “Yes. I’ve been working on a new screenplay,” Kelly told Entertainment Weekly. “There were these three graphic novels that were published 15 years ago, when the movie came out. In the theatrical version of the film, there’s animation that really alludes to the full six chapters and the events that happen prior to the movie. The existing movie is divided into chapters 4, 5, and 6. There is a chapter 1, 2, and 3. So, there is this prequel story leading up to the events of the film, which I hope to achieve using animation. Then, there’s a whole new level to the story which is Boxer and Christa’s screenplay, which they’re discussing all through the film, and you see throughout the film, that actually takes place in the year 2024. So, there is an opportunity for us to explore the world of his screenplay and the significance of what’s happening in his screenplay, and the additional reality of what that could mean.” Should this Southland Tales sequel ever get off the ground, but he hopes that Dwayne Johnson would be able to return, although he’s all too aware that Johnson is now a little out of his price range.
Yes, I realize that. [Laughs] That’s a whole other discussion that I’m not able to completely address. But I would love more than anything to work with Dwayne again on this project and with all the actors. It’s just a question of, is there a way to figure that out? I certainly hope so.
When Richard Kelly cast Dwayne Johnson in Southland Tales, the actor had a few movies under his belt, but was far from the superstar he is today, although Kelly knew he was destined for bigger things. “When I met wIth Dwayne, it was just an immediate connection,” Kelly explained. “He was immediately excited and open and just completely eager to take all these risks and dive into playing this role. It was just this wonderful connection. Getting to sit across from him — I think this was the very beginning of 2005 when we met — I was just blown away by his charisma. I’d seen him in the wrestling ring and seen a few of his movies. It was so clear to me that he was on his way to becoming the biggest movie star in the world, that he had that potential, that he had that charisma. Looking at all his work, and looking at all his performances in the pro-wrestling ring, I could just tell he had this just incredible comedic timing. I just knew that he could do an incredible job.” The Arrow Video blu-ray release of Southland Tales will drop on January 25th.

Scorpion King: Dwayne Johnson looking to relaunch the franchise
November 10, 2020 by: Kevin Fraser
Before Dwayne Johnson was a global superstar with roles in some of the biggest blockbusters of our time, he was THE SCORPION KING, a poorly-rendered villain who faced off against Brendan Fraser in THE MUMMY RETURNS. In THE SCORPION KING Dwayne Johnson reprised his role in a prequel that told the story of Mathayus and his rise to become the legendary Scorpion King. The film went on to spawn its own franchise of direct-to-video sequels, but Deadline has now reported that Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions will be working with Universal Pictures to relaunch the franchise with a brand-new movie.
Universal and Seven Bucks Productions have already tapped Jonathan Herman to pen the script, but it doesn’t appear as though Dwayne Johnson will be stepping back into the title role as the studio is apparently searching for a new actor to play Mathayus. That said, the role was a special one for Johnson, so Deadline says that “the chance of him appearing in the movie also seems like a good possibility.” There aren’t many details about the relaunch at the moment, but Deadline’s sources say that this one will be a “contemporary take set in modern times.” That sure worked out for Tom Cruise’s THE MUMMY. In a statement, Dwayne Johnson said:
The Scorpion King was my very first role ever on the silver screen and I’m honored and excited to reimagine and deliver this cool mythology to a whole new generation. I wouldn’t have had the career I’m lucky enough to have had it not been for The Scorpion King and I’m thrilled that we at Seven Bucks Productions can help create those same opportunities for other hard working actors today. I believe Jonathan Herman will put in the hard work to deliver a fantastic script for our global audience.
“The original Scorpion King was a crucial catalyst helping to catapult us into the world of film,” added Dany Garcia. “To be able to now produce the next iteration as part of our Seven Bucks Productions slate is a special, full circle moment, a testament to what we have been fortunate enough to build for our audience and ultimately a humble reminder of the timeless value of authentic storytelling.” Although there had been plans for a big-screen sequel to THE SCORPION KING following the release of the original film, the franchise ended up going the direct-to-video route with a prequel, THE SCORPION KING 2: RISE OF A WARRIOR, which was followed by THE SCORPION KING 3: BATTLE FOR REDEMPTION, THE SCORPION KING 4: QUEST FOR POWER, and THE SCORPION KING: BOOK OF SOULS.
Black Adam: Sarah Shahi joins the cast of Dwayne Johnson’s superhero film
October 14, 2020 by: Steve Seigh
Despite experiencing a series of delays, New Line and DC Films’ much anticipated BLACK ADAM starring Dwayne Johnson is steadily coming together. Today it was announced that Sarah Shahi (The Rookie, City on a Hill, Sex/Life) has joined the cast. Previously, it was reported that Aldis Hodge will play Hawkman with Noah Centineo stepping into the role of Atom Smasher.
According to reports, Shahi will play a university professor and freedom fighter leading the resistance in Kahndaq, a fictional city located in a country on the Sinai Peninsula and the birthplace of Black Adam.
Set to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, whose JUNGLE CRUISE starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt is now in post-production, the most recent draft for BLACK ADAM was written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. Plot details for BLACK ADAM are still being kept under wraps at this time, though I suspect that more information will arrive sooner rather than later, seeing as the project is finally gaining steam.
Shahi is currently filming the Netflix series Sex/Life, in which she stars as Billie Connelly. The story revolves around a love triangle between a woman, her husband, and her past which takes a new look at female identity and desire. In other words, bring a glass of water and a hand fan to this one, folks, because it’s bound to get a little steamy.
We’ll be sure to bring you more news related to BLACK ADAM as it becomes available.

It really is no surprise that Johnson has reached this level because he’s extremely personable on social media and makes his fans feel as if they really know him. He’s able to achieve a type of normalcy that alludes other celebrities of his stature and that has a lot to do with his overall success in this industry as a whole. Johnson not only took the moment to thank his fans but he also encouraged each and every one of them to “always speak your truth,” which he describes as a life lesson he learned within these past few weeks. “And when you do speak your truth – do your best to speak with dignity, compassion, respect, poise, and empathy. Even when the conversations get uncomfortable – when you approach with respect and care – on the other side of discomfort – is clarity and progress,” he adds.
Johnson is showing no signs of slowing down, whether at the box office, television, or other ventures. The actor is still wrapping up work on Netflix’s RED NOTICE and once he wraps on that, he’ll likely jump into his DCEU debut with BLACK ADAM. He can also be seen hosting the NBC sports competition series The Titan Games and is developing the biographical TV series Young Rock, which tells the story of the famous wrestler-turned-actor’s younger years. After purchasing the struggling football league with his business partners, Johnson has also saved the XFL with plans to hit the field again in 2022. Is he the hardest working man in show business? He just might be!

Metallica to compose special music for Disney’s Jungle Cruise
September 4, 2020 by: Steve Seigh
If the boat in Disney’s JUNGLE CRUISE is a-rockin’ it’s likely due to the fact that Metallica has come a-knockin’.
The legendary heavy metal band Metallica are set to raise their horns while composing music for Disney’s JUNGLE CRUISE, which is based on the popular Disney Parks ride and stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. It’s recently been revealed that Metallica will create an orchestral version of their 1991 hit “Nothing Else Matters” with composer James Newton Howard, specifically for the upcoming film. Previously, the band had presented fans with an orchestral version of the song for their live 1991 album S&M (an abbreviation of Symphony and Metallica).
“It really goes back to [Disney production president] Sean Bailey, who is a lifelong rock fan,” Metallic drummer Lars Ulrich recently explained to Collider, “and is just all-around one of the greatest, most friendly, generous, warm, and embracing people you’ll find in the music business.”
As it turns out, Metallica became a part of the Jungle Cruise score at Bailey’s request.
“We’ve gotten to know each other well,” said Ulrich. “My wife and I are big Disney fans, so there’s a great friendship there, and he’s always looked for the right match where there was a way that Metallica could contribute to some project of theirs. This was the right fit, with Sean leading the calvary, and with James Newton Howard and his track record, and what he’s done.”
While I would have preferred Metallica’s “Battery” or “Ride the Lightning” as a part of the film’s soundtrack, it sounds as if Howard has a very specific vision for how “Nothing Else Matters” will be included in the upcoming film.
“It’s kind of an interesting morph because it’s kind of — and I don’t want to give too much of it away — but it’s a very unusual morph in that it’s kind of his arrangement of “Nothing Else Matters” that we’re playing. We wrote the song, but he took the song and rearranged it to fit something specific in the film — and obviously, I’m not going to give any of that away — but we then kind of took on his version of it. I think that’s all that should be said,” Ulrich teased about the song’s inclusion.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (THE SHALLOWS, ORPHAN), Disney’s JUNGLE CRUISE is based on Disneyland’s theme park ride where a small riverboat takes a group of travelers through a jungle filled with dangerous animals and reptiles but with a supernatural element. The film stars Dwayne Johnson as Captain Frank and Emily Blunt as Lily Houghton. Also set to appear in Disney’s next money-printing adventure are actors Paul Giamatti, Jesse Plemons, Veronica Falcón, Edgar Ramirez, and Jack Whitehall.
Disney’s JUNGLE CRUISE is scheduled to set sail in theaters on July 30, 2021.
