The Wheel of Time release date teased in new poster for Amazon series
July 23, 2021 by: Kevin Fraser
While the streaming wars have made it all the more difficult for regular folks to get all the content they want under one roof, it has led to the development of some very ambitious – not to mention expensive – TV shows and movies, all in a bid to earn your subscription. Amazon has been developing an adaptation of Robert Jordan's best-selling fantasy series The Wheel of Time for several years, and while we haven't seen a heck of a lot from the series, Amazon released a teaser poster at the San Diego Comic-Con @ Home edition that lets us know that we'll finally be able to watch the series this November. Check it out below!
Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it, the story of The Wheel of Time follows Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity… Amazon is obviously quite pumped on the series, and they already renewed it for a second season back in May.
You heard what the poster said; The Wheel of Time will launch on Amazon Prime Video this November.

The Green Knight pulled from UK release over Covid concerns
July 22, 2021 by: Gaius Bolling
COVID-19 continues to plague the entertainment industry as the more contagious Delta variant continues to surge. It has been announced that A24’s THE GREEN KNIGHT has been pulled from its UK theatrical release slot a mere two weeks before it was set to hit theaters in that market. The move was made by Entertainment Film Distributors (EFD) due to the COVID situation in the UK.
Despite the UK removing virtually all restrictions on July 19, their coronavirus situation continues to look bleak thanks to the growing spread of the Delta variant. Numbers have reportedly gotten close to 50K per day and it has prompted concerns of another lockdown. Despite the surge, movie theaters continue to be open in the area and, according to “Deadline“, there is no immediate suggestion that they will be closed again.
This was also done for financial reasons. EFD usually supports its UK releases with some big marketing spend so they were likely worried that if the film kept its current date, the situation would’ve hurt its box office potential. The UK is also experiencing a heatwave along with the spread of the Delta variant and that tends to impact the box office as well.
The David Lowery-directed fantasy film starring Dev Patel is still going ahead with its U.S. release which is set for July 30, 2021. The film, based on the poem of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”, is a fantasy adventure that tells the story of Sir Gawain (Patel), King Arthur’s headstrong nephew, who embarks on a quest to confront the eponymous Knight, a gigantic tree-like creature. The movie also stars Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Barry Keoghan, and Ralph Ineson.
Was the EFD right to pull The Green Knight’s UK release over COVID concerns?
Indiana Jones 5: Production set to begin next week in the UK
June 2, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
Some said it would never happen but look at us now. That’s right, folks, production for INDIANA JONES 5 is set to begin in the UK next week. Can you feel that? It’s almost as if the weight of the pandemic is slowly and steadily starting to lift. Soak it in, and prepare yourselves for Indy’s next and final adventure.
Word has it that cameras are ready to roll at Pinewood and other locations in the UK. Set to star in the highly anticipated sequel are Harrison Ford (Blade Runner, The Fugitive), Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Another Round), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Shaunette Renée Wilson (The Resident), and Thomas Kretschmann (Avengers: Age of Ultron).
While Spielberg is sitting this one out as the film’s director, fans can rest easy knowing it’s in the hands of Logan director James Mangold. Spielberg will serve as a producer and will be involved in several elements of the new film. Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel are also producing. Also returning is composer John Williams, who has arranged every score for the Indiana Jones franchise thus far.
Plot details are being kept under Indy’s iconic fedora for the moment, though rumors suggest that the film could explore a 1960s space race theme. We’ll be sure to update you as soon as we know more. Until then, try not to explode with anticipation.
Halloween Kills: Michael Myers holds a bloody knife in fresh new image
May 14, 2021 by: Gaius Bolling
We will FINALLY get to see HALLOWEEN KILLS this year after a forced delay from its 2020 release date due to the COVID-19 pandemic and it looks like Blumhouse Productions is already trying to build the hype.
The latest tease comes courtesy of “Empire Magazine“, which has revealed a brand new image of Michael Myers with his signature bloody knife in hand. The image, which was posted on “Empire’s” Twitter page, has a caption that reads “Michael Myers is back and out for blood (as ever) in @blumhouse’s slasher sequel #HalloweenKills – coming to UK cinemas from 15 October. Here’s an exclusive new image from the movie #EmpireBackToCinemas.” You can check out the Twitter post below!

Halloween Kills is set to follow 2018’s Halloween, which was a direct continuation of the first Halloween from 1978. The new sequel will pick up right after the ending of the 2018 film with a very angry Michael Myers wreaking total havoc on Haddonfield. Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, and Andi Matichak return from the previous film while newcomers include Anthony Michael Hall and Kyle Richards.
Directed by David Gordon Green, Halloween Kills, in addition to a traditional release, will also get an IMAX presentation when it opens on October 15, 2021. Did YOU like the new Halloween Kills image?
Michael Keaton return as Batman confirmed for The Flash
April 19, 2021 by: Kevin Fraser
Fans were pleasantly shocked when it was revealed last summer that Michael Keaton was in talks to reprise his role of Bruce Wayne/Batman for THE FLASH movie, but the actor threw those plans into doubt last month when he said that he hadn’t officially signed on yet. As The Flash is now shooting in the U.K., Keaton was naturally worried about COVID-19. “I keep my eye more on the Covid situation in the UK than anything,” Keaton said. “That will determine everything, and so that’s why I’m living outside the city here on 17 acres, staying away from everybody, because the Covid thing has got me really concerned. So, that’s my first thing about all projects. I look at it and go, is this thing going to kill me, literally? And you know, if it doesn’t, then we talk.”
Well, it seems that Michael Keaton has decided the he’s ready to play Batman once again as the actor’s talent agency, ICM Partners, has confirmed to The Wrap that he will be back for The Flash. I’m officially excited. In addition to Michael Keaton, Ezra Miller will naturally be returning as Barry Allen, along with Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, and more. As I mentioned above, production officially kicked off on The Flash today, and director Andy Muschietti also revealed the official new logo for the film. The Flash is slated for a November 4, 2022 release.
Spencer: New image of Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana released
March 25, 2021 by: Gaius Bolling
Production has begun in the UK on Spencer, the film in which Kristen Stewart will be playing Princess Diana. A first-look image was released back in January but a new look at Stewart in the role comes to us today along with casting news on who will be playing Prince Charles.
Directed by Pablo Larrain with script by Steven Knight, the film details a weekend in the early '90s. when Diana decided her marriage to Prince Charles wasn't working and she decided she needed to veer from a path that had put her life in line to one day be queen. The story takes place over three days in one of her final Christmas holidays in the House of Windsor. You can check out the new image of Kristen Stewart as Lady Di at the top of this story.
Also announced today is the casting of Jack Farthing as Prince Charles. In addition to Stewart he joins Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins, and Sean Harris. Filming has been underway in Germany but has now moved to the UK under strict COVID-19 safety guidance. The goal is to have the film launch in the fall just in time for awards season.

The Flash: Michael Keaton may not be ready to return as Batman
March 22, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
After the recent departure of Billy Crudup from the cast of Andy Muschietti’s THE FLASH, the long-gestating project may lose a supporting role that fans have been very excited about. Michael Keaton, the iconic actor who brought Batman to life on the big screen in Tim Burton’s 1989 blockbuster, recently made comments that sound ambivalent at best regarding his much-ballyhooed inclusion in the metaverse of the DCEU.
Recently while speaking with Deadline, Keaton expressed concerns about reprising the iconic superhero and how doing so could be a “stupid freaking idea.” When asked if he was trying to dodge questions about suiting up as the Dark Knight for The Flash, Keaton said the following:
That’s right. No, you know what it is? I am needing a minute to think about it because I’m so fortunate and blessed, I got so much going on now. I’m really into work right now. I don’t know why, but I am, and so, yeah, I mean, you know, to tell you the truth, somewhere on my iPad is an iteration of the whole Flash thing that I haven’t had time yet…I called them and said, I have to be honest with you. I can’t look at anything right now. I’m so deep into this thing I’m doing. Also, I’m prepping a thing I’m producing and getting ready to do down the road in the fall that I’ll be in, and I feel responsible to that. So, yeah, there is that. I’m not being cute or coy. If I talked about it, I’ll be just bullshitting you. I don’t really know. I have to look at the last draft. To be honest with you, you know what worries me more than anything about all this stuff?
When asked to elaborate on what worries him about the part, Keaton admitted that Covid is one of his concerns.
It’s Covid. I’m more concerned. I keep my eye more on the Covid situation in the UK than anything. That will determine everything, and so that’s why I’m living outside the city here on 17 acres, staying away from everybody, because the Covid thing has got me really concerned. So, that’s my first thing about all projects. I look at it and go, is this thing going to kill me, literally? And you know, if it doesn’t, then we talk.
Holy uncertainty, Batman! Is there a chance that Keaton will bow out of playing the Bat if the stars don’t align? It certainly sounds like that’s the case. Personally, until it’s confirmed that Keaton’s part in The Flash has been filmed, I’m not convinced it will happen. That said, I’d love to be proven wrong.
What do you think the chances are that Keaton will go through with playing Batman again in The Flash? Hey citizens of the UK, let’s get our act together, yeah? Like us, I know that you want to see him slip into the Batsuit again. Let’s all do our part to keep people safe and make that happen, yeah?
The Sparks Brothers: Edgar Wright’s pop band documentary gets June release
March 19, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
Are you ready to go on an epic journey fueled by the sights and sounds of the influential indie electronica pop band Sparks? I certainly hope so because Edgar Wright's documentary The Sparks Brothers opens on June 18, 2021, in North American theaters.
The Sparks Brothers documentary chronicles the five-decade journey of the influential but often overlooked group that you might say is your favorite band’s favorite band, still drawing influential crowds to their shows. Inspired by Wright’s first encounter with Sparks as a kid watching them on the UK show Top of the Pops, the documentary features interviews with the L.A. duo as well as fans Flea, Beck, Jack Antonoff, Jason Schwartzman, Neil Gaiman, and more.
The Sparks Brothers had its world premiere back in February at this year's Sundance Film Festival. As it happens, our own Chris Bumbray was in attendance and got to experience the documentary for himself. In his review, he says it's hard not to fall in love with the Mael brothers, who make up the iconic band. He also notes that Wright had amassed enough material for a whole limited series, and he hopes to see a director's cut down the line.
While you're waiting for Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho, why not check out The Sparks Brothers when the band begins to play on this Summer?

The Courier trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch leads true-life cold war thriller
January 27, 2021 by: Gaius Bolling
The first trailer for The Courier has been released and Benedict Cumberbatch takes center stage in this true-life cold war thriller.
Formally titled Ironbark, The Courier is a true-life spy thriller, the story of an unassuming British businessman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) recruited into one of the greatest international conflicts in history. At the behest of the UK’s MI-6 and a CIA operative (Rachel Brosnahan), he forms a covert, dangerous partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) in an effort to provide crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear confrontation and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2020. Our very own Chris Bumbray reviewed the film during its Sundance launch and he called it "a compelling spy yarn that tells a story we should all know." Judging from this trailer, the film definitely looks like a film that's worthy of our attention.

Willow series director Jon M. Chu exits the Disney project
January 11, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
Were you one of the people waiting with bated breath for the Disney+ revival of WILLOW? If so, you may be feeling nervous as producer/director Jon M. Chu has announced his departure from the long-overdue series. Despite casting being well underway and production gearing up, Chu has cited that scheduling conflicts and personal matters have pulled him away from the high-profile project. Years after the Ron Howard/George Lucas fantasy epic teased the start of a new franchise, and decades before Peter Jackson brought The Lord of the Rings to the big screen, Willow was the height of fantasy filmmaking.
“I’m heartbroken to let you all know that I, unfortunately, have to step away from directing Willow,” Chu said in a statement that was posted to Twitter. “With the production schedule moving due to continued lockdowns in the UK, and with a new baby coming this summer (surprise!), the timing is just not going to work out for me and my family.”
— Jon M. Chu (@jonmchu) January 11, 2021
“As you may know, Willow has been one of my favorite movies since I was a child, so I’m devastated that I won’t be able to work with some of my heroes old and new like Kathy, Ron, Jon, Wendy, Michelle and the amazing cast and crew they’ve put together,” Chu’s message to fans continued. “Like a kid seeing Willow for the first time in the ’80s, I will look forward to watching this magical new world unfold as a very enthusiastic fan.”
Announced formally at the Disney investor presentation at the end of 2020, Willow is still coming but could be delayed now that Lucasfilm has to find someone to take Chu’s place. Could it be Ron Howard himself, the man who directed the original movie? How about his daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard, who has directed two episodes of Disney+ and Lucasfilm’s hit series The Mandalorian? I’d sure love to see what she could do with a long-form fantasy series filled with magic, monsters, and plenty of sword-wielding mayhem.
Let us know who you’d like to see take over Disney’s Willow series now that Jon M. Chu is off the project in comments section below.

Samaritan: First look at Sylvester Stallone’s gritty superhero film emerges
January 8, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
A new image for Sylvestor Stallone’s SAMARITAN has superhero-landed online. In the photo, we find Stallone sporting an army green coat while pressing his hand up against a nearby van. As two pedestrians look on in astonishment at Stallone’s character, we see that he’s in the midst of protecting a young child from harm. The new image hails from Slash Film, who recently spoke with the film’s director, Julius Avery, about the upcoming genre project.
“We didn’t really have superheroes…We only had action heroes. And Sly was the closest thing we had to a superhero. So to put him in a superhero movie? That feels fresh and cool and something that people will get a kick out of,” Avery explained to the outlet.
In Samaritan, a young lad learns that a superhero who went missing 20 years ago is living next door to him. Avery says the film will be a grounded affair about a kid looking for a father figure in Stallone’s character. While the film may include some heartstring-tugging elements, Avery promises that there will be plenty of action as well.
“This is a big event movie – we see our heroes kicking ass…We’re going to see Sly do things he hasn’t done in a long time, and in a really inventive way. He’s 73 years old! I’m amazed by how much he actually does. I’m telling you, most guys in their twenties wouldn’t be able to do what Sly does in this movie,” Avery told Slash Film.
Samaritan is hoping to be released in the UK on June 4th.
Captain Marvel 2: Brie Larson built a home gym to prep for sequel
January 7, 2021 by: Steve Seigh
With filming for CAPTAIN MARVEL 2 beginning later this year in the UK, it’s once again time for Brie Larson to hit the gym! Earlier today, the adorkable Larson posted a new video to her official YouTube channel. In addition to wishing her viewers a happy new year and sharing some 2021 resolutions, Larson also previewed her new home gym, which is soon to be filled with moans groans as she transforms back into Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel.
“As you may know, Captain Marvel 2 is gearing up. I can’t say much more about it than that, but, I’ve got to get ready for it. It’s time for me to get moving,” Larson explains before taking her fans on a tour of her new home gym.
You can check out Larson’s gym in the video posted below. If you’re in a hurry, just fast-forward to the 1:48 mark:
Having watched a few of Larson’s workout routines via her YouTube channel I can tell you that she does not mess around when it comes to getting pumped for her next Marvel movie outing. I also have to admit that I’m jealous of her new gym setup. I have a couple of things set up in my house too, but my situation is nowhere near as cool as Larson’s. Perhaps if I give Marvel a call they’ll send me some equipment? I’ll have to give that a shot.
Little is known about Captain Marvel 2 at this time beyond that the film will somehow tie-in to Marvel’s plans for a Secret Invasion film. Director Nia DeCosta (Candyman) has been signed on to direct, with Larson returning as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, and Teyonah Parris co-starring as Monica Rambeau.
Personally, I’m very excited to see Captain Marvel return to the silver screen once her highly-anticipated sequel gets released. I realize that the character’s first film was a point of contention for some, but I’m not about to hear that noise. Carol Danvers is one of my favorite Marvel characters, full-stop, and with the stakes being even higher for her second film there’s no telling how much ass she’s going to kick. I say bring it on!

The Batman to use The Mandalorian’s virtual production techniques
October 19, 2020 by: Kevin Fraser
In many ways, The Mandalorian felt like a return to old-school STAR WARS with its use of practical models and lived-in sets, but the technology used to bring the series to life was cutting-edge. The Disney+ series made use of virtual production techniques as more than half of the series was filmed in front of a massive 270-degree LED video wall where practical set pieces were able to be combined with digital extensions. The digital environments are also able move in relation to the camera, which is an absolute game-changer for productions and something we’ll be seeing much more of in future.
One production that’s making use of the technology is none other than Matt Reeves‘ THE BATMAN, which is still shooting after experiencing several COVID-19 delays. According to THR, Industrial Light & Magic chief creative officer Rob Bredow revealed during a session at this year’s virtual VIEW visual effects and animation confab that the virtual production technology will be used for select scenes on THE BATMAN. Bredow wouldn’t say much regarding how the technology will be used on THE BATMAN, only to say that “the production design team had pre-built practical sets in the UK and an LED wall was built around these sets to enable use of virtual production in those specific scenes.” The director of photography on THE BATMAN is Greig Fraser, who has plenty of experience with virtual production as he served the same role on The Mandalorian. Fraser also told Collider earlier this year that he predicts that nearly every film will be making use of the technology in some way in the future.
I see a world where almost every film will use this technology in some way, shape or form. Be it from a $250 million blockbuster down to a $2 million independent movie using it for one sequence that they dry hire a studio that’s already been built and they get in there like a location. So I believe when the technology kicks on and gets widely adopted, when people understand what it can do, I believe it’ll be used quite a lot.
The virtual production technology is already slated to use used for THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER and will obviously return for the upcoming second season of The Mandalorian. THE BATMAN is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
Greenland skipping theaters for huge HBO Max streaming deal
October 1, 2020 by: Gaius Bolling
GREENLAND was set to hit screens in September but was then delayed until some time in the fourth quarter for a potential theatrical release. Now that it’s looking like theatrical moviegoing is pretty much dead in 2020, the Gerard Butler disaster flick is now skipping a theatrical release and heading straight to streaming in a HUGE deal with HBO Max.
STX will control the PVOD window on the Ric Roman Waugh-directed movie. Additionally, HBO has thrown out a staggering $20-$30 million for GREENLAND’S pay-TV and streaming in the U.S. where the movie will debut on the pay-cable TV network and stream on HBO Max in early 2021. This deal is even bigger than the $17.5 million acquisition of the Hugh Jackman–Allison Janney drama, BAD EDUCATION, which was purchased out of TIFF last year.
It had been reported earlier this week that GREENLAND’S domestic release was headed exclusively to Amazon Prime. This isn’t entirely true but the film will, in fact, get a release on Amazon Prime in Canada, the UK, and Australia after lucrative deals with the streamer. STX had been planning to release the movie itself in the UK.
STX is likely going to pull in a nice profit for GREENLAND when it’s all said and done. Despite skipping the theatrical window domestically, the film has been performing very well overseas where it has grossed $20 million to date. According to the studio, the film has registered about $45 million in revenue. The film will still continue to open in territories overseas that are allowed to reopen and since GREENLAND only cost $35 million to make, between its overseas take and lucrative streaming deal, I’d call this a win for STX.
STX pulled a similar move with the Dave Bautista action-comedy, MY SPY. That film skipped theaters due to the pandemic and the film rights were then sold to Amazon Prime Video in U.S. and key foreign territories. Although the studio hasn’t released solid numbers as of yet, MY SPY was reportedly a huge success on Amazon Prime after its debut on June 26 and this is why STX is already exploring a sequel.
In GREENLAND, a family fights for survival as planet-killing comet races to Earth. John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and young son Nathan make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary. Amid terrifying news accounts of cities around the world being leveled by the comet’s fragments, the Garrity’s experience the best and worst in humanity. As the countdown to global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven. The film also stars David Denman, Hope Davis, Roger Dale Floyd, Andrew Bachelor, Merrin Dungey, Holt McCallany, and Scott Glenn.
Do YOU think this was the right move for GREENLAND?
Shudder scares up 1 million total subscribers
September 23, 2020 by: Gaius Bolling
Shudder is hitting a scary good milestone as we head into the month of October. The streaming service, which is focused on horror, thrillers, and the supernatural, has surpassed 1 million total subscribers.
AMC Networks debuted Shudder back in 2015 and you might be thinking that a million subscribers in five years aren't all that much but Shudder's streaming model has been much different from their larger media rivals launching mass-audience services like HBO Max, Peacock, and Disney+. Shudder is a very niche service but if you love horror, it has been a growing destination for the genre and it has only gotten better since AMC launched it. AMC executives have projected the company will end 2020 with close to 4 million total subscribers across Shudder and streaming siblings Acorn, UMC, and Sundance Now.
Shudder saw a surge in subscribers when Creepshow premiered on the streamer last September. Original programming is the key to any streaming service that wishes to grow and Shudder has found its footing with the aforementioned Creepshow and the original series, Cursed Films, which premiered last year and is currently working on its second season along with Creepshow. Original films like THE ROOM, Z, THE BEACH HOUSE, and HOST have also garnered more interest in Shudder while their hosted movie show, The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs, has generated significant social media buzz. Miguel Penella, AMC Networks SVOD President, had this to say about Shudder's recent growth:
"The addition of original series and movies turbocharged our growth and turned Shudder into a must-have service for anyone interested in great horror, thriller or supernatural entertainment. Our relentless focus on quality programming, innovative content and finding the best up-and-coming creators has enabled Shudder to break out in the crowded world of subscription services."
Shudder has also made the move to expand internationally. The streaming service launched in Australia and New Zealand in August which is an expansion of its presence in the U.S., Canada, Germany, the UK, and Ireland.

UPDATE – The Batman production remains paused as cast & crew quarantine
September 4, 2020 by: Gaius Bolling
UPDATE: “Variety” is now reporting that, despite earlier reports, production on THE BATMAN remains paused after Robert Pattinson tested positive for COVID-19 this week. Although “Variety” reported earlier that the film had resumed without Pattinson, they have spoken to a studio insider that denied that report and confirmed that production has not resumed. Crew members are still doing construction work on sets and props but anyone on the film team that was in contact with Pattinson is under quarantine. It appears unlikely that shooting will resume until the two-week quarantine period is over.
As the film business continues to have absolute faith in the measures being taken to keep cast and crew safe from COVID-19 on British sets, THE BATMAN has reportedly resumed production in the UK after its star, Robert Pattinson, reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. The news broke yesterday with Warner Bros. announcing that production was now on pause but according to the “Daily Mail” via “Variety“, the cameras are rolling once again, albeit, without Robert Pattinson.
Pattinson has to self-isolate for 14 days due to his positive test results which is the normal quarantine period after contracting the virus. The “Daily Mail’s” report says that director Matt Reeves is trying to finish as much of the shoot as he can without Pattinson, including scenes with the actor’s body double. This is likely being done to keep the film on track for its October 1, 2021, release date which was already pushed from June 2020 due to the pandemic shutdown.
THE BATMAN COVID-19 story has only brought attention to safety protocols on film sets in the UK. Despite what happened not that set, the chief executive of the British Film Commission and Film London, Adrian Wootton, is confident that all safety protocols are rigorously being followed:
“We know that productions in the U.K. are rigorously following BFC Guidance with robust health and safety procedures in place, including stringent testing regimes, which is why any case of coronavirus can be rapidly identified and appropriate self-isolating procedures implemented. We’re confident that with all measures in place, any production will resume filming as soon as it’s safe to do so. We also believe this will not impact production overall continuing in U.K., precisely because we have such robust health and safety measures operating, enabling our world-class film and high-end TV sector to get back up and running.”
The fact of the matter is, this start and stop style of filmmaking, due to the pandemic, is going to be the new normal for a while. I have no doubt that productions are doing everything they can to make sure their sets are safe but this is also an unprecedented event and there are bound to be some slips. Beyond trying to make sure there is no exposure at all, it should be commended that it’s being caught quickly if someone is exposed so that the proper protocols can be addressed swiftly to keep the rest of the cast and crew safe.
Keanu Reeves says filming on The Matrix 4 still smooth after COVID shutdown
August 18, 2020 by: Gaius Bolling
THE MATRIX 4 wasn’t too far into filming when they had to shut down production in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The production, which had been dark since March, got back to work in the UK recently but fans were still worried that the halt in production would cause huge delays moving forward but the film’s star, Keanu Reeves, has provided an upbeat update on how production has been handled since their return.
Keanu Reeves spoke with the “Associated Press” to promote BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC and the subject of THE MATRIX 4 came up. Reeves assured those listening that “the rhythm of filmmaking has not really been impacted or interrupted” thanks to effective safety protocols that are currently in place. You can check out Reeves’ full response below:
“We’re scrappy!” Keanu Reeves returned to playing Neo this summer on the Berlin set of “The Matrix 4.” He says producers have “thoughtful, effective protocols in place” to keep cast and crew safe. Reeves spoke while promoting @BillandTed3. pic.twitter.com/RtTsLOsyGP
— AP Entertainment (@APEntertainment) August 16, 2020
Reeves also went on to say that the rest of THE MATRIX 4 cast and crew are all banding together basically living on that old performing adage, “the show must go on.”
“You know, I think everyone loves the project. If you’re ever going to get into any kind of situation that needs to be figured out or ‘How do we do this?’ Showbusiness people are the best. We’re scrappy, we know how to get stuff done. We’re inventive, we think on our feet. That kind of kindred spirit coming together. It goes back to ‘Let’s put on a show! We’ve got some props, we’ve got some things, we’re going to run it!’ That spirit is definitely alive and well on The Matrix.”
It really seems like the productions that have resumed work in the overseas markets, have really figured out how to make sure the work environment is safe. Productions like this one or JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION, which also is back to work in the UK, will be looked at as the template to getting other productions back online domestically in the safest way possible as well. It’s great to hear that morale is high and the tenacity to get the film done hasn’t been diminished.
Plot details for THE MATRIX 4 have been kept under lock and key. All we really know is that, in addition to Reeves, the fourth installment also brings back Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Lambert Wilson while fresh faces include Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Erendira Ibarra, Andrew Caldwell, Brian J. Smith, and Ellen Hollman. Lana Wachowski is at the helm of the project while sharing screenwriting duties with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.
THE MATRIX 4 is currently scheduled to be released on April 1, 2022, and if Reeves’ enthusiasm about the rhythm of production is any indication, it’s a date that the film will definitely be able to make.
Tom Cruise hoping to shoot part of Mission: Impossible 7 in Norway
July 21, 2020 by: Gaius Bolling
It looks like Tom Cruise is hoping to shoot some of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 in Norway which provided the backdrop for one of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT’S most memorable scenes, in which Cruise scales a sheer cliff face.
Cruise spoke with Norway’s culture minister Abid Raja about filming in the country this fall and Raja tweeted that he is “hoping to get Tom Cruise and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE back into Norway.” Raja also released a short audio clip of his conversation with Cruise where the actor says “It’s a gorgeous country. I can’t wait to get back there. I’m very excited, as is the whole crew, about coming back.”
— Abid Q. Raja (@abidraja) July 18, 2020
Raja told Norwegian website VG that MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 is aiming to shoot in north-western Norway, known for its spectacular fjords, mountains, waterfalls, and rugged coastline. Raja also suggested that MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 8 (the two Christopher McQuarrie-directed films have been due to shoot back-to-back) should consider shooting in the country as well. No word on if the eighth installment will also attempt a Norway shoot but part 7 is looking pretty likely to have at least some of the production shift over there.
Raja does acknowledge that coronavirus concerns and restrictions could pose logistical problems for shooting in Norway and it is something he has to discuss further with the government:
“The coronavirus means that at the moment it is not possible to come to Norway in the same way as before. We will have to discuss this in the government and make regulations for it before we give permission to film in Norway. We will abide by the rules and coronavirus restrictions. I will take my conversation with Cruise to the government.”
As of now, Norway currently asks arrivals from a number of non-EU countries – including the U.S. – to observe a 10-day quarantine period. Cruise has been in the UK in recent weeks preparing to resume shooting on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 so the 10-day quarantine period may not apply for the cast and crew that has been in the UK gearing up for a return to production.
Would YOU like to see MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 make a return to Norway?
Tom Cruise & Christopher McQuarrie may be developing an R-Rated project
July 7, 2020 by: Kevin Fraser
Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise have enjoyed an incredibly fruitful relationship over the years, and McQuarrie’s first time directing Cruise was the highly underrated JACK REACHER. When it came time to develop JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK, McQuarrie was only involved in a producing capacity as he handed over directing duties to Edward Zwick. Unfortunately, the sequel wasn’t quite as successful as the first and wound up stalling the franchise after two films.
While speaking with Empire, Christopher McQuarrie revealed that Cruise and himself had hoped to develop a third film in the JACK REACHER series that would have “really fed into the brutality of [Lee Child’s novels].”
Tom and I were talking about, had the series continued, to take Reacher to a place where, in the post-Deadpool, post-Joker world, Reacher could have been an R-rated movie and an R-rated franchise and really fed into the brutality of those books. We were fully ready to lean into that.
Although an R-Rated JACK REACHER film may not be in our future, Christopher McQuarrie teased that he’s got something else with an R-Rated edge in the works with Tom Cruise. “It’s a very un-Tom character, and we have plans for an even more un-Tom character that we’ve been talking about, which I’m hopeful about in the future,” McQuarrie said. “The franchise has moved on, and we haven’t. So we’ve now got stuff in the hopper. The [Jack Reacher] stuff we’re talking about now is tinker toys [compared to it], I’m actually very, very excited.” While one could argue that many of Tom Cruise’s characters are essentially the same, when the actor does give us something out of the ordinary, the results are typically quite memorable, ala COLLATERAL or TROPIC THUNDER, so I’d definitely be down for something out of Cruise’s wheelhouse.
Before Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise get up to any R-Rated shenanigans (that sounded better in my head), they’re set to resume filming on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 & 8, which was halted earlier this year thanks to COVID-19. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 is slated for a November 19, 2021 release, with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 8 expected to follow on November 4, 2022. Tom Cruise will next be seen in TOP GUN: MAVERICK on December 23, 2020.
Mission: Impossible 7 gears up to return to filming in the UK
July 6, 2020 by: Gaius Bolling
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 was eyeing a possible September re-start on production in the UK after filming was shut down in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic but it’s looking like the action sequel may be able to get started sooner than anticipated.
The UK Government has said it will publish guidance this week allowing “small numbers of essential cast and crew” to travel to the UK without having to quarantine for 14 days. Those individuals will need to live and work in “bubbles” comprising accommodation and filming locations only. Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden revealed that he also has spoken to MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE star, Tom Cruise, about the plans to get productions back to work and they specifically touched on how MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 and 8 can resume filming at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. Cast and crew on the production had previously said that filming could re-start in September but Cruise is already in prep in the country, which could indicate an earlier re-start than the planned September timeframe. Dowden had this to say about film and TV production resuming in the UK:
“The world’s biggest blockbusters and high-end TV shows are made in Britain. Our creativity, expertise and highly successful tax reliefs for our screen industries means that we are an in demand location that in turn delivers a great return for our economy. We want the industry to bounce back and exempting small numbers of essential cast and crew from quarantine is part of our continued commitment to getting cameras rolling safely again.”
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 is one of a handful of major British-qualifying U.S. productions waiting to get back underway in the UK. Universal Pictures will resume filming on JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION this week and the news about MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 is another indication that the UK is prepared to safely get productions up and running again. I would imagine that other studios and networks will be looking at how the UK is handling these measures so they can set a template about getting productions re-started in the States and in other countries.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 was originally slated to open on July 21, 2021, but the date was shifted to November 19, 2021, due to the halt in production as the coronavirus pandemic shuttered filming all over the world. This release date change also affected the launch of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 8 which was originally intended to open on August 5, 2022, but had to be pushed to November 4, 2022, due to the delay in filming.
Spider-Man 3 hopes to swing into shooting by September
July 2, 2020 by: Gaius Bolling
The COVID-19 pandemic has put a lot of Hollywood productions in flux as the industry prepares to get back to work after going dark back in mid-March. Several films were all set to start up production this summer and one of those projects was the third SPIDER-MAN film to followup SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME. The initial plan called for the film to start filming in July, ahead of a summer 2021 release but those plans were adjusted due to the global health crisis. With SPIDER-MAN 3 now set for release in November 2021, Sony Pictures has begun to eye potential dates to begin shooting and they’re hoping that they can remain on track.
An updated SPIDER-MAN 3 talent grid hints at September 2020 as a target date for production to begin. When “Screenrant” reached out to confirm the date, Sony wanted to be clear that this is not set in stone and no specific date is locked down due to the uncertainty caused by the pandemic. So while the plan is for cameras to start rolling this fall, Sony remains uncertain if they actually will. There some factors that could make Sony feel confident about making that date and a lot of it has to do with how other projects that are gearing to return to work handle the new safety protocols put in place to ensure a proper work environment. In recent weeks, multiple movies and TV shows have established plans to resume filming including JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION, which is getting ready for a restart in the UK, AVATAR 2, which has begun filming in New Zealand again and Netflix’s The Witcher, which is looking to return in August. As more productions get this right, it bodes well for SPIDER-MAN 3 being able to stick to its proposed schedule. What the studios will be looking at is if these productions to star first don’t encounter any major problems when they return to filming. Specifically, any outbreaks of the virus that could occur within the cast and crew will be something studios pay close attention to. If things go poorly on that side of things, Sony might hit pause on a September production start for SPIDER-MAN 3. The good thing about the September target date is that it gives Sony the luxury of waiting and seeing what happens as other productions head into this new normal before they do.
This is why Sony pushed the release date to November 2021. They wanted time to start production and have a comfortable period to also work in post-production so that the sequel would not be rushed to meet it’s initial summer 2021 release date. On top of any lingering health concerns, Sony’s UNCHARTED movie starring SPIDER-MAN’S Tom Holland is supposed to come out before the third SPIDER-MAN film. This makes it really hard to predict when Holland will have time to work on both films. It helps that both films are under the Sony banner so they can be pretty transparent with the scheduling but they’re very much aware that further delays could put both films in a position to move their future release dates.
At least Sony has sent something tentative for SPIDER-MAN 3 and I hope they can stick to it. It’s a strange time for Hollywood and there is a desire to get back to work but there is also a lot of uncertainty about how to get it done. It will take a lot of planning and hard work but I’m sure that the powers that be will make sure the machine will get running smoothly once again.
Do YOU think SPIDER-MAN 3 will meet its September target to start shooting?
1993’s Jurassic Park stomps back to the top of the box office
June 23, 2020 by: Gaius Bolling
2020 has been a crazy year so it should come as no surprise that a film released 27 years ago actually topped the box office over the weekend. Steven Spielberg‘s JURASSIC PARK, released 27 years ago, was number one at the box office for the fourth time in its release history this past weekend. Most of the business was driven by drive-ins and other hard-top theaters that have chosen to reopen.
JURASSIC PARK grossed $517,600 at 230 sites, dethroning last week’s champ, THE INVISIBLE MAN. This is all a win-win for Universal Pictures since they’re the studio behind both films and they had a reason to celebrate another classic catalog title as JAWS landed in second place with a gross of $516,300. You can tell that these catalog titles are enticing for some moviegoers because the grosses for JURASSIC PARK and JAWS were an improvement over last week’s numbers for first and second place which had THE INVISIBLE MAN and TROLLS WORLD TOUR grossing $383,000 and $275,700 respectively.
These numbers for JURASSIC PARK are a far cry from the money the film was earning during its original run but it’s still a nice little bonus for Universal Pictures. JURASSIC PARK originally held the top spot at the box office for its first three weekends of release following its June 11, 1993 opening which came in at $47 million. The film was reissued in 2013 over the April 5-7 weekend and opened to $18.6 million in fourth place. The reissue added $45.3 million to the film’s domestic gross which brought it to $404.3 million.
JURASSIC PARK follows a pragmatic paleontologist that is visiting an almost complete theme park who is tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park’s cloned dinosaurs to run loose. The film was followed by 1997’s THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK and 2001’s JURASSIC PARK III. The franchise was given a fresh new life in 2015 with the release of JURASSIC WORLD which was followed by JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM in 2018. JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION is set to return to filming in July in the UK after being halted due to COVID-19.
Did YOU check out JURASSIC PARK this weekend? Have YOU explored other classic catalog titles are your local drive-in?
Colin Trevorrow to helm Atlantis for Universal Pictures
June 22, 2020 by: Steve Seigh
While in the midst of prepping a re-start to production for JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION, it’s been announced that the film’s director, Colin Trevorrow, is setting up another project at Universal Pictures centered on the mythical lost city of Atlantis. Based on a story by Trevorrow and Matt Charman (BRIDGE OF SPIES, THE CONNECTION), the filmmaker’s Atlantis project will be written by Dante Harper, whose original spec All You Need Is Kill led to the making of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt‘s EDGE OF TOMORROW. Harper is also the writer behind FOREVER, a new project that has ROGUE ONE director Gareth Edwards attached.
For Trevorrow’s Atlantis project, the famed city of mystery will be set on a lost continent in the Indian Ocean between Africa, India and Oceania. It is a multicultural civilization with its own advanced technology. Trevorrow’s been keeping the Atlantis project under his hat since 2018, so as to allow for his creative team — led by production designer Kevin Jenkins (JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION) — ample time to research the project’s themes and ideas, before delving into the scripting process.
One can only imagine what wonders await Trevorrow’s Atlantis, especially if the filmmaker and his team plan on going in a less traditional direction when presenting the fabled city to audiences. Will Trevorrow’s version arrive as something akin to Marvel’s Wakanda? What manner of iconography will the set designs display when dressing the project’s landscape? How will the world react to Atlanteans and their hyper-advanced technology? Perhaps these questions and more will be answered as Trevorrow’s Atlantis thriller continues to take shape. We’ll be sure to keep you updated.
Jurassic World: Dominion set to be first movie to resume shooting in the UK
June 15, 2020 by: Gaius Bolling
After implementing rigorous safety protocols on-site, JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION is on course to be the first major studio movie to resume shooting in the UK after the COVID-19 pandemic made productions go dark in the area. Cameras are expected to roll the second week of July (July 6) at Pinewood Studios.
Universal Pictures and the filmmakers behind the project have been working to pull out all the stops to get production back underway after the shoot had to shut down just four weeks into a 20-week shoot. Universal has been working with the UK’s British Film Council and U.S. unions to ensure the production meets required safety standards and they’re even going beyond these protocols to make sure they’re on the level when it’s time to begin shooting again. The studio will be spending $5 million on its protocols, which will see the production carry out thousands of tests during the remainder of filming. All cast and crew will also be tested before returning to set and then again multiple times during filming.
The protocols will also include the commission of a private medical facility called Your Doctor to manage the entire production’s medical needs; COVID training for all cast and crew; on-site doctors, nurses and isolation booths; 150 hand sanitizer stations; nightly anti-viral ‘fogs’; more than 1,800 safety signs put up around Pinewood; and ‘Green Zones’ for shooting cast and crew:
“Anyone with symptoms will be isolated immediately before being sent home. We want to make sure that we are going above and beyond the national protocols to create a safe environment. Cost isn’t our main concern now: it’s safety. We will take direction from our medical team, but we’re confident that with the staggered scheduling and zones of talent and crew, along with a system of contact tracing, we can move forward with limited delay in production.”
Universal Pictures has clearly crossed their T’s and dotted their I’s on this one because the program has been vetted and approved by Universal chairman Donna Langley and Universal’s senior leadership team. Langley has been a very vocal advocate of getting the industry back into production and has even been the driving force behind the working group for LA County’s economic resiliency task force on behalf of the media and entertainment sector.
JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION has been one of a handful of major studio productions on hold in the UK. The government gave the film and TV industries the go-ahead for production to re-start last month but there have been some safety protocols that needed to be set in place before work could begin once again. Unlike many productions, Universal’s previous insurance policy will remain in place without exclusions, which is part of the reason the studio is able to return to production so quickly. As far as its stars like Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, they will fly back to the UK shortly where they will need to carry out a two-week quarantine per new government regulations.
The fact that a major studio release seems prepared to get back to work so swiftly bodes well for other UK productions that were shuttered during the pandemic. Other productions that may take the lead from Universal in order to get back to work include THE BATMAN, THE LITTLE MERMAID, and FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM 3.
No Time to Die takes Godzilla Vs. Kong’s old release date.
June 13, 2020 by: Chris Bumbray
In a not so surprising move, Deadline is reporting that the new 007 flick, NO TIME TO DIE, is taking GOZILLA VS. KONG’s old November 20th release date. This isn’t a huge move, with the Bond film originally scheduled to drop November 25th, with it notably one of the first films to vacate its release date way back in March in the wake of COVID-19. Originally, the film was scheduled for an Easter holiday release. Internationally, the film is still set to bow in the UK first, with a November 12th release date.
This comes in the wake of a whole bunch of release date swaps, with Warner Bros essentially revising their entire schedule for the next two years yesterday, which included moving TENET to July 31st, and WONDER WOMAN 1984 into October.
Industry task force creates guidelines for filming during the pandemic
June 2, 2020 by: Gaius Bolling
Various movie productions overseas have given the go-ahead to resume work on film and TV projects now that safety guidelines are in place. AVATAR 2 is gearing up to head back into production in New Zealand while it was announced that MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 is setting a September timetable to resume production now that safety protocols have been established for filming in the UK. Lost in all this has been the central hub of Hollywood itself as productions aim to get back to work, particularly in Los Angeles where the film and TV industry bring major revenue to the city. Now that many U.S. states are lifting lockdown orders and reopening businesses, Hollywood studios, performers, guilds, and production crews have begun to work out a plan on how to reopen the entertainment industry.
According to a report in "Variety", guidelines are being put in place that would allow cameras to start rolling again on film and television productions during the pandemic. The guidelines pretty much fall in line with what's being practiced overseas and they include mandatory temperature checks on set, actors wearing protective gear, daily symptom monitoring, consistent equipment sanitation, and a designated COVID-19 compliance officer on location. The plan was formulated by The Industry-Wide Labor-Management Safety Committee Task Force and here is more of what some of the 22-page document has to say about the guidelines:
"Limiting face-to-face contact with others is the best way to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Cast and crew must practice physical distancing whenever possible. Physical distancing involves maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet from any other person at all times, except when doing so is incompatible with one's job duties. Cast and crew should avoid congregating in groups. When practical, separate work locations into zones to facilitate physical distancing."
The document was recently presented to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's office and is also expected to be delivered to California Governor Gavin Newsom and the Los Angeles County of Public Health for review. I'm going to assume that current world events regarding the protests, looting, and riots won't make this review a priority but at least something is in place to get the ball rolling when the time is right. Film and TV sets can be very crowded, particularly on larger-scale films with sizable crews and ensemble cast members. Enforced guidelines are definitely going to make productions very different but at least it will allow actors and crew to safely return to work. Much like any business that has been lucky to reopen, it's going to be trial and error but I think it's something that will be done right. I went to a restaurant for the first time in months on Sunday and it felt normal and safe. The proper guidelines were implemented and the establishment was able to run without missing a beat. The same thing will happen on film and television sets as they get used to their new normal of working.
